Councilman Peter Hammerle and the East Hampton Art Committee are pleased to announce that the outdoor sculpture commission for the East Hampton airport has been completed by Linda Stein.
The brightly painted sculpture, called The East Hampton Sky Ride, is a fun piece made from actual airplane parts, including instrument panels, exhaust manifolds, steering wheel and nose of a plane. The artist spent months interviewing pilots and visiting airports throughout the tri-state area where she purchased interior and exterior parts to create the feeling of movement and space. Stein explained that she is "fond of doing commissions with actual materials used by an industry or family because the related research and learning experience is also enjoyable."
Linda Stein, a resident of East Hampton and Manhattan, has been exhibiting with the Arelene Bujese Gallery and the Nabi Gallery on the East End as well as the Anita Shapolsky Gallery in New York. This past April, she spent three weeks in Japan, exhibiting her sculpture at the Sakai City Museum. In August, she will have an exhibition at the Spiva Art Museum in Joplin, Missouri.
In addition, Stein has written artist profiles for the East Hampton Independent, FiberArts Magazine and other periodicals. She is curator for Art Acres, a one-hundred acre sculpture garden in Boca Raton, Florida, and has curated the permanent art collection as well as the Shirley Fiterman Gallery for the Borough of Manhattan Community College.
Linda Stein has a Master's degree from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor's Degree (Cum Laude) from Queens College, both in New York. She has exhibited her art in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, and has been awarded many grants, commissions and artist residencies.
The Stein sculpture, measuring approximately five feet hight, ten feet wide, and three feet deep, has been installed onto the stone wall outside the airport building entrance and is readily available for the public to see.
