The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States and the subsequent war on terror were the motivation and inspiration.... Linda Stein, who lives and works not far from Ground Zero in New York, was deeply moved by the many women who came forward to help victims that day and created her most recent sculptures in their honor.

Having recently shifted from abstraction to figuration, Stein envisaged wall-mounted female torsos as shields. Although the forms are almost generic in their outlines, the collagelike surfaces are rich, incorporating patterns and words with a wide range of objects, from shards of metal to bits of textiles, paper, rivets, and stones....
